and a pal (acquitted) said cop made indecent proposal. Judge Marks was sure no cop would do such a thing, called it "the most vicious and perjurous statement ever made by any defendant since I've been on the bench."

There were complaints in NY when 3-time killer Fred Wood, 48, was recently paroled. At 14 he'd poisoned girl of same age. Many arrests: drunk, theft, mostly annoying women, with whom he was cloyingly gallant. Strangled a woman ("to get even with a whore'') in 1933. Murdered a man (''who made dirty remark about my picture") in 1942. Paroled from Dannemora, Wood panhandled in Greenwich Village and Times Sq., where he met John Resegnio, 62, went with him to shack in Queens shared with Fred Sess, 78. While Sess slept, Wood got mad over "an indecent proposal," and smashed both men's skulls. "If there's anything I hate," he told detectives, "it's degenerates and Commies."

Syndicated smear-artist Lee Mortimer prides himself as the fingerman of NY gay bars. When the MIRROR's Mortimer "exposes" a gay spot, the cops or the AlcyBev bulls move in. Samples from recent diatribes:

MORTIMER STRIKES AGAIN: The corner of 78th and B'way is a disgrace to New York with one of the largest gay concentrations on earth, attracted by the infamous Davi Club which, though it lost its liquor license for the usual reasons (and is on the military off limits list), is in business. bigger than ever selling "set-ups to an "all-boy" clientele which stands bumper-to-bumper at the bar and out into 78th causing a traffic hazard. . . If you wonder what happened to the queens and princesses after the Colony

(w. 8th) got knocked off, the customers moved around the corner to 15 Greenwich. No name on window or marquee, but its New Year's Eve every night... A gorilla followed us out and around the corner, but we turned the tables and followed the hood right back into the place. . . .

The Lion (w. 9th), mentioned here recently, was put on Armed Forces Police index, but it's selling liquor and packed every night... Now there's a "Raided Premises" sign in the window of Frank's (e. 81st), immortalized here last week as the new haven of the old Grapeviners (both mixed-up sexes) but apparently it doesn't interfere with business as usual . . . This is for the Record: Not one of the joints in this town catering to the so-called "unfortunates" is owned by one of the "unfortunates." The Mob is in or in back-or protecting everyone, and that's why they operate... It may be hard to be-lieve that apes and goons like Tony Bender, Vito Genovese and all the other so-called tough guys, including imprisoned Frank Costello and exiled Joe Adonis collect tribute from the dainty handon-hippers, but they do. They're the ones I'm gunning for, not the deviates who excuse their aberrations on the grounds of sick-

ness. . .

DEPT. OF STIFLED YAWNS: There's an international group known as the Mattachine Society, Inc. with headquarters at 1133 Broadway, which acts as a sort of defense agency for homosexuals. It talks loudly and stridently about their "civil rights" and lobbies to secure legislation making such disgusting practices legal. That has been done in many continental countries. The campaign is well on the way to
